About Ed

Ed Barr teaches business communication in the Master of Science in Computational Finance (MSCF) program at Carnegie Mellon University where he has also taught professional writing, speaking, nonprofit marketing, healthcare marketing, and negotiation for over 25 years.  In addition, he has taught students and businesspeople around the world in China, India, Kazakhstan, England, The Netherlands, Panama, and Mexico. 

Ed has had a successful marketing career, serving as Chief Marketing Officer for iCarnegie, a CMU for-profit startup, and Vice President of Marketing for Allegheny University Medical Practices.  Additionally, Ed has taught corporate executives and staff for companies such as Cognizant, an IT consulting company of 250,000 employees, and Cinepolis of Mexico, the second largest movie theater company in the world with whom he also consulted on an innovation project.  His marketing career also took him to Brazil, Colombia, and Turkey. He worked for TPC Communications and participated in their efforts to take the company public, meeting and influencing investors, brokers, and shareholders.

Ed has spoken to diverse audiences around the world and is considered an expert on cultural communication and business communication. He is the author of several books, including “101 Tips for Improving Your Business Communication,” co-produced by Harvard Business Publishing and Business Expert Press.  He is also the author of two books on careers, “Ask the Right Questions; Get the Right Job,” and “How to Use Marketing Techniques to Get a Great Job.”  Ed is currently finishing a fourth book regarding crisis management and communication.

Ed has served on the admissions committee of the Carnegie Mellon University Bachelor of Science in Computational Finance program, and he owns an online company, Ugetin, that helps high school seniors to prepare for college admissions by sharpening their interviewing skills, cover letters, resumes, and personal statements.

Ed has used social media successfully, having over 250K followers on TikTok and several thousand followers on LinkedIn and Facebook, where his photography is particularly valued.
